Searching the Collection
Everything on this page works together to narrow one set of results. Start anywhere — choose a filter, type a word, or enter a number — and the results update on their own.
The dropdowns (Region, Mapmaker, Technique, First Published, Second Category) are interactive: the moment you choose one, the others reshape to show only the options that still have matching maps. Pick a mapmaker and the Technique list narrows to just the techniques that mapmaker used, so you keep closing in without ever hitting a dead end.
Alongside them:
Keyword searches the catalogue text — titles, mapmakers, descriptions, places, and so on. A year like 1799 works here too.
Map ID narrows to the single map with that exact number.
Map Year filters by a date range — enter a start and end year.
Any of these can be combined, each one narrowing things further. When you want to start fresh, the Reset button clears it all at once.
