Sydney in 1848
Joseph Fowles was an English-born artist active in Sydney in the mid-nineteenth century. He is best known for this illustrated book, which was intended to show the city through its principal streets, public buildings, churches, chapels, commercial premises, and civic spaces. Published in Sydney by D. Wall from 1848, the work appeared in twenty fortnightly parts and was later reissued in 1878 by Gibbs, Shallard & Co.
