Le Nouveau Miroir des Voiages
Lucas Jansz. Waghenaer was a Dutch pilot, chartmaker, and author from Enkhuizen whose sea atlases transformed European pilotage. Drawing on practical experience at sea, he developed printed pilot books that combined charts, sailing directions, coastal profiles, and navigational instruction in a form that became the model for later European sea atlases. His Spieghel der zeevaert, or Mariner’s Mirror, first published in 1584–85, was so influential that English mariners adopted the term “waggoner” for sea atlases of this kind.
The Spieghel was quickly translated and adapted for an international audience, including the 1591 Latin edition represented by title page 260. In 1596, Amsterdam publisher Cornelis Claesz. issued an expanded second edition, Den Nieuwen Spiegel der zeevaert (The New Mirror of Navigation), with a related Antwerp edition published by Jean Bellère. A French edition followed in 1600 and was reprinted in 1605, as shown by this title page. The French title page acknowledges the Dutch pilot Willem Barentsz., here named Guillaume Bernard, whose added notes, sightings, and descriptions reflected the continuing expansion of Waghenaer’s navigational project. Barentsz. led three expeditions in search of the Northeast Passage and died after his crew’s wintering on Novaya Zemlya in 1596–97.
The title page is richly designed around the image of navigation as a “mirror.” At the top, a group of navigators and scholars gathers around a large circular mirror, accompanied by globes, charts, books, dividers, a quadrant, and other navigational instruments. Oval views of the Zuiderzee, Lisbon, Helsingør, and Venice surround the title panel, presenting important maritime centres of Europe. The lower section depicts a dramatic encounter between Dutch and English ships, reinforcing the practical and commercial importance of navigation in an age of expanding overseas trade.
Within the collection, this title page is closely connected with the Latin edition title page (260).
