Ansicht von Sydney von der Südseite, und der Mündung des Parramatta-Flusses
Gottfried Daniel Berger was a German engraver active in Berlin in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. This view of Sydney was produced for the German edition of the Baudin voyage account, Entdeckungsreise nach Australien, translated from the French and published in Weimar by Friedrich Justin Bertuch between 1808 and 1819.
The engraving, titled Ansicht von Sydney von der Südseite, und der Mündung des Parramatta-Flusses, is closely based on the original French view published in the official account of Nicolas Baudin’s expedition. The French caption Vue d’une partie de la Ville de Sydney, capitale des Colonies Anglaises aux Terres Australes, et de l’entrée du Port Jackson dans lequel cette Ville est située (View of a part of the City of Sydney, capital of the English Colonies in the Southern Lands, and of the entrance to Port Jackson in which this City is situated), was modified in German, shifting the emphasis to the southern viewpoint and the mouth of the Parramatta River.
In the foreground, figures and vegetation frame the scene, while an encampment of tents marks the presence of the French expedition. Ships are anchored across the harbour, and the settlement of Sydney extends along the shoreline in the distance, with low buildings, a church spire, and a windmill visible on the ridge.
The image translates French expedition material into a German publishing context, with the caption shifting emphasis to the Parramatta River and southern viewpoint. It presents Sydney as both a working harbour and a developing colonial town, seen through the lens of European scientific and exploratory travel.
