Melbourne (Australie)
Henri Félix Emmanuel Philippoteaux was a French artist best known for historical and military subjects, but his name also appears on published views that brought distant places into the visual culture of nineteenth-century Europe. Melbourne (Australie) is a French view of Melbourne, drawn by Philippoteaux, engraved by Taylor, and printed by Louis Dupain in Paris.
The print shows Melbourne from an elevated viewpoint on the south side of the Yarra River, looking north towards the developing city. In the foreground are figures, a cart, horses, and a simple timber structure, while the urban skyline appears in the distance. The contrast between foreground settlement activity and the emerging city beyond gives the image a staged sense of colonial growth.
