Die Bai von Sydney, Neusüdwales (Nach der Natur)

Friedrich Wilhelm Kuhnert was a German painter and illustrator best known for animal and landscape subjects, many of them based on direct observation. This chromolithograph, titled Die Bai von Sydney, Neusüdwales (Nach der Natur), was issued around 1905 and presents Sydney Harbour as a broad scenic view rather than as a navigational chart or topographical map.

The print emphasises the natural form of the harbour, with wooded shores, open water, and vessels moving through the bay. Its German title identifies the view as taken “after nature, ” a phrase that presents the image as an observed landscape rather than an imaginary or purely decorative scene. The harbour is shown as both a natural setting and a working maritime space, with shipping integrated into the scenic composition.

As a late nineteenth- or early twentieth-century view of Sydney, the print sits apart from the collection’s earlier charts of Australia but provides a useful visual counterpart to them.
