Sydney

This view of Sydney was drawn by G. F. Sargent, engraved by G. Greatbach, and published in Thomas Milner’s Gallery of Geography by W. & R. Chambers in London and Edinburgh in 1864.

The engraving presents Sydney from an elevated viewpoint across the harbour. The foreground includes houses, trees, roads, fencing, and a horse-drawn vehicle, while the city stretches across the middle distance with wharves, shipping, public buildings, church towers, and smoke rising from urban and industrial activity. The harbour remains central to the composition, with sailing vessels and small craft linking the city to its maritime setting.

The print belongs to the mid-nineteenth-century illustrated view of colonial Sydney.
