Sydney in New South Wales

Carl Mayer was a German engraver active in the nineteenth century, associated with the production of steel-engraved views for illustrated books and travel publications. This view, although English titled was originally produced in Germany around 1850. It presents Sydney as a picturesque colonial port, with the harbour, boats, shoreline activity, and town buildings.

The foreground shows a small landing place beside the water, with a seated figure holding a fishing rod. Beyond the harbour, the town rises along the shore, with shipping and public buildings helping to identify Sydney as both a colonial settlement and a maritime centre. The church visible in the distance may be intended to evoke one of Sydney’s early Anglican landmarks, possibly St. James’s Church.
